Shades are a great option for your home or office, but it helps to understand the average cost of roller shades per window to avoid making costly mistakes.

It seems like something as straightforward as a window shade would be a simple thing to buy. But when you start shopping, there are so many details, it can become complicated. And then there's the cost: it's hard to know what to budget.

Well, in this post, I'm going to shed some light on the average per window cost of roller shades. You will learn what factors affect the cost, and on average, what you can expect to spend.

First, the average cost of custom roller shades can vary widely based on many factors:

  • Material: Different materials - such as fabric, vinyl, or wood - impact the price.

  • Size: Larger windows require more material, which increases costs.

  • Style: Styles such as roller shades, fabric Roman shades, and cellular shades have different price points.

  • Brand & Quality: Premium brands typically charge more for their products, but these brands usually offer better quality, and product warranties.

  • Features: Additional features like motorization, blackout capabilities, special shapes, cordless lift, trims, valance upgrades, etc. will add to the cost.

  • Installation: Professional installation comes at an additional charge.

Estimated Price Range

On average, window shades can range from:

  • Low-end: $50 to $150 per single window for ready-made and cut-to-fit shades, like the ones at big box stores. These are mainly DIY shades, not custom, and the quality is low. These shades can't be expected to last long.

  • Mid-range: $200 to $400 per single window for inexpensive made-to-measure shades. These shades will hold up better than the low-end ones, but styles and material choices may be limited, and there are no frills.

  • High-end: $400 and up per window for custom name-brand roller and cellular shades, and $600 and up for woven-wood and fabric Roman shades. For motorization, double the cost. Highly durable, these shades will include solid manufacturer's warranties, and can be expected to last for many years.

Don't forget to factor in tax, shipping and installation. These charges are additional.

As you can see, the costs add up quickly! Maybe you're shocked. I tell my customers to think of their window treatments as they would lighting fixtures or flooring or millwork - something that becomes an integral part of your home or business.

When considering the average cost of roller shades per window, don't skimp. Make sure you spend ENOUGH money on your shades! Get a good quality product to start with, and you won't have to deal with broken, non-functional shades later.
