Curtains or Draperies: What’s the difference?

The difference between curtains and draperies comes down to the details. Basically, both curtains and draperies are panels of fabric that hang from rods. While curtains are usually simple – unlined and lightweight - draperies are heavier and more constructed, designed to be operable, and they afford significant protection from heat and cold, and sunlight. It’s easy to find curtains ready-made, but draperies, not so much. Here’s what you can expect from fine, custom draperies:

1. Fabric Selection: Custom draperies feature high-quality fabrics with appropriate weight, drape (also known as “hand”), and durability. Beautiful, high-quality drapery fabrics fulfill the desired aesthetic, functionality, and performance requirements.

2. Measurement Accuracy: Accurate measurements ensure a perfect fit for custom draperies, and beautiful proportions that elevate the total appearance of the space. Precise measurements of the window dimensions, as well as any desired drapery fullness or stacking space, allow the workroom to create the right look and fit.

3. Seam Construction: Strong seams are essential for the longevity of custom draperies. Durable, color-matched thread, using double stitching or blind hems, creates clean and secure seams that withstand the test of time.

4. Lining and Interlining: Lining and interlining make a big difference in the appearance, functionality, and insulation properties of custom draperies. Quality lining materials, such as cotton sateen or blackout lining, offer the desired level of light control and privacy.

5. Header and Pleat Styles: The header and pleat style of custom draperies contribute to their overall aesthetic and functionality. Common header styles include rod pocket, pinch pleat, Euro pleat, and grommet top. The choice of header style can complement the design of the draperies and the architectural features of the space.

6. Hem Finishes: The hem finish of custom draperies adds a polished touch to the overall appearance. Blind hems, hand-sewn hems, or weighted hems create clean and professional-looking finishes that hang beautifully.

7. Hardware and Installation: Proper hardware selection and installation ensures that custom draperies function smoothly, safely and securely. Quality curtain rods, brackets, and rings are selected based on the weight and style of the draperies, and installed properly to support the weight of the fabric.

8. Quality Control: Throughout the fabrication process, the workroom implements rigorous quality control measures to ensure that each set of custom draperies meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and quality. Inspections are conducted at various stages of production to identify and correct any defects or imperfections before the product is delivered.
